Why Goal Setting is necessary?

Goal setting is the most important element in everyone’s life. Without Goals, there will be no direction in your life. It’s like a ship without a captain on it. Directionless.

Goal setting is a powerful process for thinking about your ideal future, and for motivating yourself to turn this vision of the future into reality. The process of setting goals creates a step forward to help you choose where you want to go in life. More than this, properly-set goals can be incredibly motivating, and as you get into the habit of setting and achieving goals, you’ll find that your self-confidence builds fast.

Achieving With Focus  -  All successful business people, top level athletes and achievers in all fields always use Goal setting techniques. They used to focus on their Short-Term Goals and Long-Term Goals. By setting sharp, clearly defined goals, one can measure and take pride in the achievement of those goals.

By setting goals, you will also raise your self-confidence, as you recognize your ability and competence in achieving the goals that you have set.

Setting Goals –  Goals are set on a number of different levels: First you create your “big picture” of what you want to do in your life, and decide what large-scale goals you want to achieve. Secondly, you break these down into the smaller and smaller targets that you must hit so that you reach your lifetime goals. Finally, once you have your plan, you start working to achieve it.

We start this process with your Lifetime Goals, and work down to the things you can do today to start moving towards them.

Achieving Goals – Achieving goals can bring you one step closer to happiness, opportunity and security. Goals come in different forms – a fantastic job, home ownership, owning a nice car, taking long vacations, starting a family and building wealth. How would you go about shaping your dreams to create the life you want?

We all generate millions of thoughts in our minds everyday like, “I would like to be millionaire, win the lottery, lose weight, volunteer, change careers, return to school.” Most are random and incorporate our beliefs, values, daily influences and experiences. This is considered “mind chatter”. Mind chatter is a form of self-talk that can cause self-doubt and confusion. What is perceived in the mind may take a different direction and meaning if developed as a goal on paper. And this means putting “you” out there – taking a risk.

If you want your goals to become a reality, you should identify them by writing them down. When writing goals consider the following -

  • Specific… No matter whatever will be the goal, always write in depth. If you don’t know what you want, how to accomplish it? For instance, you would like to volunteer and make a difference in your community by helping families and you like to build things. How? One way would be to clearly specify that you want to work with Habitat for Humanities building houses on the weekends. Find out all the possible way to be involved and map out how you would fit in the scheme of things.
  • Realistic… Never set yourself up for failure. After clearly defining the goals, determine whether you can live up to the expectations of those goals. If your job or lifestyle schedule keeps you from committing to a particular goal or area of interest, you might want to revisit it at a later stage in life like getting married, having kids, starting your own business, etc.
  • Timing? … Goals should always be measured in Short-Term and Long-Term durations and typically span over a lifetime, helping you stay on track and monitor your progress. As your life changes, so will your goals. It is recommended that you review and update the goals regularly.
  • Measurability?… Your goals should always be a measurable accomplishment – challenges your abilities, helps you to grow and become a better person, acquire a better life. When you decided to attend college you expected to receive a bachelor’s degree once you completed the program, right?

It’s not always easy to look in the mirror and decide what’s in your future – but it can be fun. So when you put your goals together remember the above, the same principles apply no matter the purpose.

SMART Goals – A useful way of making goals more powerful is to use the SMART mnemonic. While there are plenty of variants, SMART usually stands for:

S – Specific
M – Measurable
A - Attainable
R - Relevant
T – Time-bound

For example, instead of having “to sail around the world” as a goal, it is more powerful to say “I have to complete my trip around the world by December 24, 2009.” Obviously, this will only be attainable if a lot of preparation has been completed beforehand!

Enjoy The Goals –  When you have achieved a goal, take the time to enjoy the satisfaction of having done so. Absorb the implications of the goal achievement, and observe the progress you have made towards other goals. If the goal was a significant one, reward yourself appropriately and share it with your family, friends and the people, if possible.

With the experience of having achieved the goals, review the rest of your goal plans:

  • If you achieved the goal too easily, make your next goals little harder.
  • If the goal took a dispiriting length of time to achieve, make the next goals easier.
  • If you learned something that would lead you to change other goals, do so.
  • If you noticed a deficit in your skills despite achieving the goal, decide whether to set goals to fix this.
  • Failure to meet goals does not matter much, as long as you learn from it. Feed lessons learned back into your goal setting program. Key Points Goal setting is an important method of:
  • Deciding what is important for you to achieve in your life.
  • Separating what is important from what is irrelevant, or a distraction.
  • Motivating yourself.
  • Building your self-confidence, based on successful achievement of goals.

If you don’t already set goals, do it now. As you make this technique part of your life, you’ll find your career accelerating, and you’ll wonder how you did without it!
